"cnn newsroom" continues with brooke baldwin. >> thank you. good to be with you on this thursday. important jobs news with just five days to go here before the election. this is a new report, released today which indicates the u.s. employers hiring in bigger numbers than expected. let me be clear. this information, this is not coming from that all-important government jobs report. that doesn't come out until tomorrow. so today's numbers come from adp. they process payroll so let's go straight to alison kosik for this. what more do we know about this report? >> okay. what this report does, brooke, surveys how many jobs that private employers have added so it means all those industries that are outside of the government arena and what it said this time around for october is 158,000 jobs were added. and it came in better than expected, seeing good job gains in services and construction and a second report on jobs showing unemployment claims fell by 9,000 last week. decent pieces of news from the labor market but the reality is analysts say it may not have a huge imp

cost ello. this hour, superstorm sandy has a cruel, cold kitchen following in its footsteps. this new storm is lashing the northeast with snow, rains and wind and hitting the very same areas struggling to recover from last week's devastation. up to eight inches of snow in some areas and power outages from delaware to maine. chewing into the coastline, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and heat. rob marciano is on new york's staten island, one of the hardest-hit areas from sandy, where residents now face a whole new set of problems. i just can't imagine the misery there, rob. >> reporter: no. the people that live here, just trying to survive here, they couldn't believe it was happening last night as well. snow was coming down, much more than we anticipated, matter of fact. we got probably four or five inches of it. the sun is trying to break through. the snow is done. that's good. at this time during sandy, the water was up and over my shoulders. homes like this off their foundation f their home was still standing, the bottom floor is completely gutted and brought in ac

crisis across the northeast, of course, as gas becomes scarce after sandy and folks begged for help in places like staten island. and we're going to get all of that to you in a moment. first, i want to tell you this. the reports that got the attention of the american public, american voters, and the spin teams as well. from both campaigns, as a matter of fact. now, that would be these numbers you're looking at right now. that's the jobs numbers here. they are stronger than expected. i want you to take a look. the u.s. added 171,000 jobs last month. but, you know, i must emphasize this, the unemployment rate inched up .1%. that's 7.9%. the numbers are on your screen. so more jobs than expected, but a higher rate of unemployment. both campaigns have something to chew on right now and chew they did, of course. here is mitt romney. >> he said he was going to lower the unemployment rate, down to 5.2% right now. today we learned that it is actually 7.9% and that's 9 million jobs short of what he promised. unemployment is higher today than when barack obama took office. >> now, as you migh

. appreciate it. >>> so the rover now from superstorm sandy and what would be an unprecedented move, election officials in storm-wracked new york, they're considering drawing the election past tuesday. interesting. we thought that might happen. voters could get an extra day to cast ballots. it was only common sense, people, that they would have to do something like this. that day would be scheduled as far as 20 days after election day. late yesterday, new jersey chris christie ordered that there be extended voting hours past the weekend. power is slowly being restored. more than 2 million people along the eastern seaboard are still without electricity, 700,000 of those are in new york making for a very cold night with temperatures expected to hover just above freezing. on a positive note, though, new york city public schools will reopen tomorrow. skool schools that were heavily damaged will remain closed, and students in those schools will be assigned temporary locations. some recovery there but still a long way to go. >>> two days before election day. what have the campaigns done right and w

victims of superstorm sandy. the "new york post" is reporting the long island power authority is sending out normal bills to its customers, zapping them for charges, even though they were left in the cold and dark for weeks on end. it's the latest in response to sandy. >> this is a crisis of epic proportions. this is a natural disaster. we are here as one community together to send a message. we've had enough. lipa is disgusting. the management of lipa should be fired from top to bottom. >> whoa. alison kosik joins me now from new york. wow. you have a response from lipa. what does it say? >> reporter: okay so what lipa is doing is trying to deflect outrage. lipa is telling us, because they had to use meter readers to help with the effort to restore power, that many residents received estimated bills instead of actual ones. and that their next actual meter reading will reflect the period they didn't have electricity. but still, people aren't happy. no surprise there. one telling me he plans to tear up his next bill in an act of civil disobedience. and the "new york post" talked with othe

absolutely hammered by superstorm sandy and then the nor'easter that added insult to injury. and now the tables are turning as the west coast is going to be bracing for a monster weather pattern that has several states locked on to it's radar for a five-day assault. chad myers is watching the rain, wind, and the snow that is coming. they are really going to get it. how bad is it expected to be? >> there could be 20 inches of rain in spots. you put that up in the mountains and you're talking ten feet of snow and all of a sudden you have mudslides, snow slides, avalanches. it could be an ugly mess. you say a couple of days. i see four separate storms over the next 16 days hitting the same period. one storm out in the pacific, headed through san francisco and up to truckee. you don't go anywhere without the chains in your car. they are going to be chaining everything up and down there through the i-80 pass. there's the flood threat in the green because it's not going to be snowing there. there could be a foot of rain before it finally stops. we are seeing all of this purple area. that's
